In Reality Ariane, the Spanish Flu (or something like it) of the early 1900s was much, much worse. While the Spanish Flu killed more people than the first World War, the "Ariane Flu" killed 99.9% of the population, leaving a mere two million alive.
That was about a century ago. Ariane is only about ten years "behind" Homeline, but the great collapse set it back by centuries. Supposedly, most of the people of Ariane are at TL0, outside of the outworld colonies.[1]
