Part of the Retrofuturism genre Dieselpunk covers the science fiction of the 1920s - 1950s. Its predecessor is Steampunk.
Subdivisions[]
There are rough subdivisions within dieselpunk:
- Ottensia aka interbellum era (1918-1939)
- Piecraftian aka WWII
The end of Dieselpunk is debated with some saying it was with the end of WWII while others say it continued into the early 1950s.
Variants[]
- Decopunk (also called Raygun Gothic) is based on the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne that appeared in the dieselpunk era. The protagonist of The Gernsback Continuum sees 'semiotic ghosts' of this unrealized future.
- Atompunk/Atomicpunk overlaps dieselpunk to some degree. Atomic power regularly appeared in Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Classic: Atomic Horror serves as an example of this genre.

Note[]
Much of pulp science fiction is dieselpunk with the rest Atompunk with some of it mislabeled as Steampunk partly due to aspects (like aether) being carried over.
