History (IQ/Hard) is the study of the recorded past. Requires specialization. (compare Archaeology)[1] There may be some overlap between eras, geographies and ideas, which may allow a default to some related History skill, from -2 to -4.
Specialization Options[]
- Limited geographical region: no larger than a small nation; can cover multiple eras
- For instance: History (Bavarian), History (Irish), or History (New York State).
- A single era and one of a broad geographical region, culture, or idea
- For instance: History (20th-Century American), History (Ottoman Muslim), or History (Napoleonic Military)
Notes[]
- It is not exactly clear where the system theory of history would be considered a method or a specialization in of it self.
- History is a rather rare skill in GURPS. In most adventures, History takes a back seat to Hidden Lore.
As an NPC Skill[]
Sometimes it's best to ask some expert or sage about history. Or perhaps you just need to track down an ancient tome or archived record with Research. Or ask a ghost![2]
